China tests 500 kmph-speed train .Awesome!!

China has test-run its latest high-speed train that can reach a maximum speed of 500 kmph. The train is built by China's largest rail maker CSR Corp. Ltd., Xinhua reported Monday.Ding Sansan, the company's chief technician, said the train design was inspired by China's ancient sword. The bodywork uses plastic materials reinforced with carbon fiber. It "will provide useful reference for current high-speed railway operations," it quoted train expert Shen Zhiyun as saying. But future Chinese trains will not necessarily run at such high speeds, CSR chairman Zhao Xiaogang told the Beijing Morning News."We aims to ensure the safety of trains operation," he said.China's railway industry has had a tough year, highlighted by a collision between two high-speed trains in July which killed at least 40 people.Construction of new high-speed trains in China has since been a near halt.
In February, the railways minister, Liu Zhijun, a key figure behind the boom in the sector, was dismissed over corruption charges that have not yet been tried in court.

A white Christmas with Samsung

The technology brand has released special white editions of its most popular models to commemorate the season - the Galaxy Note, S II and Ace. Not sure which model would suit? We break it down for you.Be sure to pair this gift with a microSD card as the 153MB of built-in storage won't get you very far, especially when the inner shutterbug is unleashed. This is the easy-to-handle phone to get for that curious older relative who wants to jump onboard the smartphone-wagon but remains unsure if they'll enjoy the ride.It also sports a 5-megapixel autofocus camera which is complemented by an LED flash and a tiny slit for the loud speaker. One of the biggest draws with upgrading to a smartphone is the ability to connect to social networks and share content. If the loved one you're thinking of is new to the smartphone game but keen to start with the Android platform, then consider introducing the Galaxy Ace into the picture. The camera on the Ace is perfect for such purposes and also offers several nifty features such as smile detection and a panorama sweep mode.Running on the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system, it also has Samsung's TouchWiz 3.0 interface which gives it a slightly different look and feel compared to other Android smartphones.Holding down the home button brings up a window showing all applications running in the background. It also doubles up as a handy task manager for killing unwanted applications to conserve battery life. The customised drag-down notification area also houses handy switches for turning on/off WiFi, Bluetooth, rotation lock and mute settings. This entry-level smartphone is a tidy little package with a glossy front, silver sides, and textured back and a 3.5in touchscreen. If there's any fears or hesitation with the thought of touchscreen typing, the Galaxy Ace boasts an alternate method for text input with Swype. This aptly named feature basically allows users to enter a word by sliding their finger from letter to letter. It may feel weird at first but after a couple of swipes (pun intended), you may be surprised to find that you could potentially type faster than on traditional Qwerty keyboards.
The most pressing question one must answer every holiday season is "what do I buy for the loved ones?" If you have already decided that gadgets are the way to go this Christmas, then why not celebrate it in style with a visit to Samsung's Galaxy?

Motorola wins Apple wireless patent fight in Germany

The Android smartphone maker had complained that Apple failed to license one of its wireless intellectual properties.Apple uses the technology in its iPhones and 3G iPads.Motorola could now try to force Apple to remove the feature from its devices or halt sales in Germany. However, Apple said it intended to appeal.
Motorola said the ruling validated its "efforts to enforce its patents against Apple's infringement".Apple responded: "We're going to appeal the court's ruling right away. Holiday shoppers in Germany should have no problem finding the iPad or iPhone they want."If Motorola does decide to pursue an injunction blocking sales of Apple's products the case could result in a clash between the iPad maker and Google - Motorola's shareholders have approved the search giant's takeover of their company and the deal is due to be completed in 2012.

Astronomers discover 18 new alien planets—and they're huge

Astronomers have found 18 new alien planets, all of them Jupiter-size gas giants that circle stars bigger than our sun, a new study reports. The discoveries increase the number of known planets orbiting massive stars by 50 percent. The exoplanet bounty should also help astronomers better understand how giant planets form and grow in nascent alien solar systems, researchers said. The haul comes just a few months after a different team of researchers announced the discovery of 50 newfound alien worlds, including one rocky planet that could be a good candidate for life. The list of known alien planets is now well over 700 and climbing fast. The researchers surveyed about 300 stars using the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and instruments in Texas and Arizona. They focused on so-called "retired" type-A stars that are at least 1.5 times more massive than our own sun. These stars are just beyond the main stage of life — hence the name "retired" — and are now ballooning out to become what's known as subgiant stars. The team scrutinized these stars, looking for slight wobbles caused by the gravitational tug of orbiting planets. This process revealed 18 new alien worlds, all of them with masses similar to Jupiter's. All 18 planets also orbit relatively far from their stars, at a distance of at least 0.7 times the span from Earth to the sun (about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers).

BlackBerry problems hit four continents

LONDON: A series of failures in Research In Motion's private network has disrupted BlackBerry service to millions of customers across four continents.Extensive delays hit Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India on Monday and the problems spread to Brazil, Chile ,Argentina on Tuesday."The messaging and browsing delays being experienced ... were caused by a core switch failure within RIM's infrastructure," the company said in a e-mailed update late on Tuesday afternoon in Toronto.RIM's BlackBerry service has long been prized by executives and politicians who rely on its security and reliability to deliver e-mail and other messaging to mobile workers. The Canadian company manages this service via servers parked within enterprises and hooked up to a proprietary network carried by wireless operators."Although the system is designed to failover to a backup switch, the failover did not function as previously tested," RIM said.Failover refers to the automatic switching of service to a standby server in the case of a failure of a main system.RIM hosts a number of network operating centres, including one at its headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario, and another in southern England, which manage the massive amounts of data that flow through its system.RIM said it was now working to clear a large backlog of data and restore service as quickly as possible."We apologise for any inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed," it said.

Samsung delays new Android model release after Jobs's death

SEOUL: Samsung Electronics Co said on Monday it had delayed the launch of a new smartphone based on Google's latest version of Android operating system while the world paid tribute following the death of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs. The delay also comes as intensifying legal battle between Apple and Samsung is set to reach the most crucial moment this week, with the two technology giants set to meet in courtrooms in the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, South Korea and Japan.Samsung had planned to introduce the new product based on the Ice Cream Sandwich system, which will unite the Android software used in tablets and smartphones, at its Mobile Unpack event in San Diego on Tuesday."We decided it was not the right time to announce a new product while the world was expressing tribute to Steve Jobs's passing," a Samsung spokesman said. Samsung has yet to decide on a new date for the release, the spokesman said.Jobs died on Wednesday following a yearslong battle with pancreatic cancer, and tributes from world leaders, business rivals and fans have poured in since.Samsung and Apple are suing each other in 10 countries over 20 cases since April, but few of them holding as much significance as the California court ruling on Thursday, since it could affect Samsung's mobile device sales in the United States, one of its biggest markets.

Norway killer planned red wine treat before attack

OSLO (Reuters) - The confessed killer of more than 90 people in Norway wanted to prepare by hiring two top-class prostitutes and drinking some expensive French wine, the document he distributed on the Internet showed on Monday. In a 1,500-page manifesto and instruction manual for would-be "crusaders" against Islam and liberal European politicians, the document written by Anders Behring Brevik says preparations should include a photo session after a "few hours in a solarium to look fresher".Brevik, who police say has confessed to the killing, was appearing in court on Monday on a police request to hold him for a further eight weeks after his Friday detention. The manifesto sets out Breivik's ideas and also documents a period from April 2002 to the day before the July 22 attacks, showing a mixture of obsessive planning and glimpses of his everyday life."This house is infested with beetles. Just now I was about to reach for a chocolate in my goodie bag and a beetle had crawled in," he wrote of the farm where he made his preparations. The document discusses friends and family and says at the end of April he spent time "partying" before getting down to work on the farm he rented to make a bomb.

WikiLeaks' Assanges in UK court extradition appeal

LONDON (Reuters) - Lawyers for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange asked a court for a second time on Tuesday to block his extradition from Britain to Sweden for questioning over allegations of sexual misconduct, arguing the case was legally flawed. The 40-year-old Australian computer expert is in the High Court in London for a two-day hearing after losing an initial challenge to the extradition order in February. His defence lawyer Ben Emmerson told two judges the European arrest warrant (EAW) on which he was being held was flawed because it failed to provide "a fair, accurate and proper" description of his alleged sexual misconduct in Sweden.Emmerson also argued Assange, arrested in December and now on bail, was a victim of a "philosophical and judicial mismatch" between English and Swedish law on what constituted sex crimes.Swedish prosecutors want to question Assange about three allegations of sexual assault and one of rape made by two women, both WikiLeaks volunteers, in Sweden last August. He denies the allegations and has not been formally charged with any offence. The whistle-blowing website began publishing a cache of more than 250,000 secret U.S. diplomatic cables which angered the U.S. government and caused a media sensation.Assange, wearing a dark-blue suit, sat quietly in court, swapping notes with his defence team and aides.Fellow Australian and left-wing investigative journalist and author, John Pilger, sat close by. He had earlier arrived at court to be greeted by a small group of supporters some carrying banners reading: "Free Assange."In a case which has drawn huge international interest, two judges are being asked by Assange's legal team to rule that his sexual encounters with both women were consensual and the alleged offences do not merit extradition.A judge originally dismissed arguments by Assange's defence team that he would not get a fair trial in Sweden and that it would ultimately violate his human rights.Assange has said he believes the Swedish case is politically motivated. The U.S. government is examining whether criminal charges can be brought against Assange over the leaks. Assange fears extradition to Sweden could be a stepping-stone to him being taken to the United States. His lawyers have in the past argued he could be sent to the Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba or even face the death penalty.Even if the High Court upholds the extradition request, Assange could take his battle to Britain's Supreme Court, the country's highest, though this can only be done on a point of law considered to be of general public interest.A Supreme Court ruling would mark the end of the process.Assange has hired a new legal team to represent him after his previous team, which included prominent British attorney Mark Stephens, was seen as too confrontational. Replacing Stephens is prominent human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce. She has represented accused militants in high-profile cases, including former prisoners held by the United States at Guantanamo, and the "Guildford Four," a group of Irish citizens whose conviction in an alleged IRA bomb plot was overturned after they had spent years in prison. In an emailed statement prior to the appeal hearing her office said "it would be highly unusual" for the High Court to pronounce a decision over the appeal on the same day. "It is normal for a written judgment to be given," it said. After a brief spell in prison following his arrest by British authorities at Sweden's request, Assange was released on bail and has been living under strict court-imposed restrictions at a country mansion in eastern England.Despite the bail conditions, which include wearing an electronic ankle tag, reporting to police daily and respecting a curfew, Assange celebrated his 40th birthday with a party there on Sunday.

Tanks deploy in east, Syrians flee northern town

AMMAN (Reuters) - Thousands of Syrians fled the historic town of Maarat al-Numaan to escape troops and tanks thrusting into the north in a widening military campaign to crush protests against President Bashar al-Assad.In the tribal east, where Syria's 380,000 barrels per day of oil is produced, tanks and armoured vehicles deployed in the city of Deir al-Zor and around Albu Kamal on the border with Iraq, a week after tens of thousands of people took to the streets demanding an end to Assad's autocratic rule."Cars are continuing to stream out of Maarat al-Numaan in all directions," one witness told Reuters by phone. "People are loading them with everything, blankets, mattresses on roofs."Syrian forces pushed towards the town of 100,000 that straddles the main north-south highway linking Damascus with Syria's second largest city Aleppo, after arresting hundreds of people in villages close to Jisr al-Shughour, near the border with Turkey, residents said. The government said security had been restored in Jisr al-Shughour after fighting earlier this month in which it said 120 security personnel were killed, and urged residents who fled the military crackdown on the rebellious town to return.Witnesses said residents assisted by deserting security forces had attacked a police compound in Jisr al-Shughour 10 days ago after police killed 48 civilians. About 60 police, including 20 deserters, were killed.A statement issued after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday also said Syria's Red Crescent aid organisation would coordinate with Turkey "to facilitate the return of Syrian citizens".More than 8,500 Syrians have sought sanctuary in Turkey, which has set up four refugee camps across the border from Jisr al-Shughour.A 36-year-old Syrian who gave his name as Ahmed fled with his wife and six children to Turkey after learning troops had arrived in Jisr al-Shughour, near a village where he resides."We came here to protect our family. We're not against them (security forces) but they fight us like we were infidels," Ahmed, sunburnt and dressed in a dirty tracksuit, told Reuters in a narrow street in the Turkish border village of Guvecci.A Turkish Red Crescent official, who requested anonymity, said more tent camps were being prepared at the eastern end of the 800 km border, near the Turkish city of Mardin, far from where the current influx of refugees is concentrated. The state-run Anatolian news agency said an envoy from Assad, Hassan Turkmani, would visit Turkey on Wednesday for talks with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. The Turkish leader had developed a close rapport with Assad but has grown increasingly critical of his military crackdown.

Seven fall into sea while posing for photograph after bridge collapses

GEORGE TOWN: Seven people, including three boys, fell into the sea near here after the bridge they were standing on gave way while they were posing for a photograph at the Batu Maung jetty. The group, who had earlier attended a protest by some 30 trawler operators against the Government's move to increase the price of subsidised diesel, had wanted to pose with their boats in the background. They were standing on the bridge and calling out to other fishermen to join in for the photograph when the bridge collapsed. However, as the water level was low, they managed to climb onto the remnants of the bridge before walking back to shore.During the protest, Ismail Kassim, 58, said the Class B operators-cum-fishermen from Batu Maung and Teluk Bahang were worried that they would also be affected by the increase in diesel price to RM1.80 per litre for deep-sea C2 trawlers.“We are still buying diesel at RM1.25 per litre and we will not be able to afford a decent living if there is an increase.“We are already spending up to RM600 sometimes RM800 a day for the diesel when we are out at sea for nine hours,” Ismail said.Class B trawlers are allowed to fish within 20 nautical miles from the coast. It was reported that more than 100 trawlers were docked at the Malaysia Fisheries Department Authority complex in Kuantan after fishermen claimed that they could not afford to go out to sea due to the sudden increase in diesel price.

Fighting in Zawiyah shuts Libya road to Tunisia

ZAWIYAH, Libya (Reuters) - Libyan troops loyal to Muammar Gaddafi fought gun battles with rebels in the town of Zawiyah on Saturday, witnesses said, shutting the coastal highway that links the capital Tripoli with Tunisia. Two Reuters reporters travelling via the town, which lies just 50 km (30 miles) outside of Tripoli, on two separate trips six hours apart, were diverted via backstreets with a police escort while the fighting raged on.They said the highway was deserted except for lots of soldiers, police and armed men in civilian clothes. One heard bursts of gunfire coming from the direction of the city."The situation is very bad in Zawiyah. There's been fierce fighting since the morning," said the resident, who gave only his first name, Mohammed, fearing reprisals.Four months since Gaddafi's forces crushed a popular uprising against his four-decade rule that then morphed into an armed rebellion, Libya's civil war is in stalemate.Nearly three months of bombings by NATO war planes against Libyan military targets have failed to unseat Gaddafi or enable the rebels to launch an offensive on his territory in Tripoli.Several explosions were heard in Tripoli throughout the afternoon, as late as 8 p.m. (1800 GMT), suggesting NATO was ramping up attacks after a quiet morning.Libya TV reported that "the imperialist aggressors" had bombed several sites in and around the Libyan capital, in the town of Yafran, then showed footage of what it said were children wounded in past NATO bombings, to violin music.
Rebel spokesman Ahmed Bani said a senior Gaddafi aide had been wounded in a NATO strike on a city close to Tripoli on Saturday evening and was in hospital. There was no independent confirmation and Libyan officials were not available to comment.

Fighting erupts in Zlitan, Turkey offers Gaddafi exits

BENGHAZI (Reuters) - Heavy fighting between pro-Gaddafi troops and rebels broke out in a Libyan city just 160 kilometres east of Tripoli, potentially opening the coastal road to the capital, just as cracks appeared among NATO allies.
Gaddafi forces also shelled for the first time the world heritage-listed city of Gadamis, some 600 kilometres southwest of the capital on the Tunisia and Algerian border, opening a new front in the five-month long civil war.
World powers gave mixed signals on how the deadlocked civil war might play out, with Russia trying to mediate reconciliation. Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday he had offered a "guarantee" to Gaddafi if he left Libya, but received no reply. With diplomacy stalling, rebels said fighting was erupting on new fronts.Ahmed Bani, a military spokesman in Benghazi, told Reuters clashes had broken out in Zlitan on Thursday and resumed on Friday with Gaddafi forces killing 22 rebels.Zlitan is one of three towns that are under government control between the rebel-held Misrata and the capital and were it to fall could act as a stepping stone to allow the anti-Gaddafi uprising to spread from Misrata, the biggest rebel outpost in western Libya, to Gaddafi's stronghold in Tripoli."Large numbers of troops are surrounding Zlitan from all directions and are threatening its residents with having their women raped by mercenaries if they do not surrender," Bani said, adding the rebels controlled parts of the city.

Yemen's Saleh has surgery in Saudi, crowds cheer exit

SANAA/RIYADH (Reuters) - Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, wounded in an attack on his palace, underwent surgery in Saudi Arabia and Yemenis seeking his overthrow celebrated what they hoped was the end of his 33-year rule.
A Yemeni ruling party official said Saleh would return to the country within days, but with a power struggle already under way and gunfights raging in parts of the country, the threat of further turmoil remained high.A medical source in Saudi Arabia told Reuters Saleh was awake and in good condition after undergoing surgery on Sunday to remove shrapnel from his chest."People are worried about what will happen after Saleh's departure. They're most worried about a military coup or struggles for power within the army," said Farouq Abdel Salam, a resident of the southern port city of Aden.Concerns are mounting that Yemen, already on the brink of financial ruin and home to al Qaeda militants, could become a failed state posing a threat to the world's top oil-exporting region and global security.Saleh has exasperated former U.S. and Saudi allies, who once saw him as a key partner in combating Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, by repeatedly reneging on a Gulf-brokered deal under which he would quit in return for immunity.Leaving      Yemen could make it hard for him to retain power."I think this is the end of Saleh's reign," said Ghanem Nuseibeh, founder of Cornerstone Global Associates and senior analyst at Political Capital.

Saudi Arabia brokers new truce in Yemen

SANAA (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has brokered a fresh truce between a powerful Yemeni tribal federation and forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, a Saudi source said on Saturday, and a tribal leader said his followers were abiding by it. Saudi-brokered truce agreed a week ago held for only a day before fresh street battles broke out in the capital Sanaa, leading to the most intense fighting there since the uprising against Saleh's 32-year role began.Broadcasters Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya, citing Yemeni and Saudi sources, said Saleh was on his way to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment, a day after suffering head wounds in a shelling attack on a mosque in the presidential compound, but Yemen's deputy information minsiter denied the reports.Seven people were killed when what appeared to be rockets hit the presidential palace and several government officials were wounded. Saleh blamed a tribal federation for the assault."The rocket was devastating. It was a clear assassination attempt against the president," said Abdulla Ali al-Radhi, Yemen's ambassador to the United Kingdom. The BBC reported that the attack left Saleh with shrapnel near his heart and second-degree burns to his chest and face. It said sources close to the president had told the broadcaster Saleh had a piece of shrapnel almost 7.6 cm long under his heart.

Yemen fighting spreads, at least 50 killed this week

SANAA (Reuters) - The Yemeni opposition paraded through Sanaa the bodies of 50 people it said were killed in clashes with President Ali Abdullah Saleh's forces this week as fighting spread on Friday and edged towards civil war.Street battles in the capital have killed at least 155 power the last 10 days, marking an escalation in the uprising to end Saleh's three-decade long rule of the impoverished state which started in January. About 370 people have been killed in total.Major fighting in Sanaa also spread for the first time to the southern part of the city, an area held by forces loyal to Saleh and possibly marking a turning point in the conflict. There were also explosions heard in Taiz, where the United Nations said it was investigating reports that 50 have been killed in the southern city since Sunday.

Cruise ship passengers injured in Gibraltar blast

MADRID (AP) - Twelve passengers on a cruise ship moored in Gibraltar have been injured after a dockside tank holding used oil and water exploded as workers were welding it.Gibraltar's government says the passengers on the "Independence of the Seas" operated by Royal Caribbean, suffered injuries ranging from minor burns to a fractured shoulder. The ship sailed away from the affected area immediately after the blast.A government statement said one Spanish worker involved in the welding operation suffered life-threatening injuries and a second worker had less serious injuries. The explosion sent black smoke billowing into the air, hiding Gibraltar's famed "Rock" from view. The government said the workers were welding atop the tank. An investigation was under way to determine the cause.

Suicide blast kills powerful Afghan police chief

TALOQAN, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed one of the most powerful men in north Afghanistan on Saturday, underlining the spread of insurgent violence in once peaceful parts of the country and casting a shadow over plans for Afghans to take control of security.A provincial police chief, at least two Afghan policemen and two German soldiers also died in the attack on political and military leaders, Afghan and NATO officials said. They were meeting in the capital of northern Takhar province to discuss an operation against insurgents, and at least another 10 people were injured, including the provincial governor, said the governor's spokesman Faiz Mohammad Tawhidi.NATO's commander for the northern region, German Major General Markus Kneip, was among the wounded but not seriously hurt, General Rainer Glatz told reporters in Berlin. The most high-profile casualty was General Dawood Dawood, police chief of north Afghanistan, a former deputy interior minister and before that a close associate of mujahideen commander Ahmad Shah Masood. The loss of such a prominent and influential leader is a big blow to a force which is struggling to professionalise and shake off a reputation for abuse and corruption as foreign forces prepare to hand over security responsibilities in coming years. He had been energetic opponent of the growing insurgent movement in the north, fostering state-sponsored armed self-defence groups known as the Afghan Local Police and organising campaigns against the Taliban. The day of his death he held a news conference announcing the start of operation Hope, which aimed to oust the insurgents from Takhar and neighbouring Kunduz, where they have only gained a strong foothold in recent years.

Egypt's Mubarak fined for communication service cut

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court on Saturday fined ousted President Hosni Mubarak and two former officials 540 million pounds ($90.64 million) for cutting off mobile and internet services during January protests, a court source said.It was the first court ruling to be made against Mubarak since he was ousted on Feb. 11. Mubarak faces more serious charges, including ordering the killing of protestors, a charge which could carry the death penalty.A judicial source said the administrative court fined Mubarak 200 million Egyptian pounds, former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif 40 million pounds, and former interior minister Habib el-Adly 300 million pounds. The court ruled that Mubarak, Nazif and Adly were guilty of "causing damages to the national economy" and the fines would be paid to the country's treasury, the source said.At least 800 people died during 18 days of protests that toppled Mubarak, and more than 6,000 were injured by live ammunition, rubber bullets, water cannons and batons.Telecoms operator Vodafone said in January it and other mobile operators had no option but to comply with an order from the authorities to suspend services in selected areas of the country during the peak of the anti-government demonstrations.

Air France crash sparks pilot mystery

PARIS (Reuters) - A French airliner plunged out of control for four minutes before crashing into the Atlantic in 2009, investigators said, in a report raising questions about how crew handled a "stall alarm" blaring out in the cabin.
Information gleaned from black boxes, and recovered almost two years after the disaster killed 228 people, confirmed that speed readings in the Airbus cockpit had gone haywire, believed to be linked to the icing of speed sensors outside the jet.As Air France pilots fought for control, the doomed A330 dropped 38,000 feet, rolling left to right, its engines flat out but its wings unable to grab enough air to keep flying. The plane crashed on June 1, 2009, en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. Black boxes stopped recording at 0214 GMT.France's BEA crash investigation agency said in a detailed chronology of the crash that commands from the controls of the 32-year-old junior pilot on board had pulled the nose up as the aircraft became unstable and generated an audible stall warning.Aviation industry sources told Reuters that this action went against the normal procedures which call for the nose to be lowered in response to an alert that the plane was about to lose lift or, in technical parlance, 'stall'.This type of aerodynamic stall is nothing to do with a stall in the engines, both of which kept working as crew requested."A stall is the moment at which a plane stops flying and starts falling," said David Learmount, operations and safety editor at the British aviation publication Flight International.

Face to face, Netanyahu rejects Obama on borders

WASHINGTON – In a blunt display of differences, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the idea of using his country's 1967 boundaries as the basis for a neighboring Palestinian state on Friday, declaring his objections face-to-face to President Barack Obama who had raised the idea just 24 hours earlier in an effort to revive stalled Mideast peace talks.Though the two leaders, meeting in the Oval Office, found cordial and predictable agreement on the other central element that Obama outlined in his Mideast address Thursday — ironclad Israeli security alongside a Palestinian nation — progress on the bedrock issue of borders seemed as elusive as ever.In his speech, Obama gave unprecedented prominence to a long-held U.S. stand that Israel opposes: A Palestinian state should be shaped around the border lines that existed before the 1967 war in which Israel took control of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. An essential part of what Obama proposed was that Israelis and Palestinians would also have to agree to swaps of land to account for Israeli settlements and other current conditions, a point Netanyahu failed to mention."While Israel is prepared to make generous compromises for peace, it cannot go back to the 1967 lines," Netanyahu declared. "These lines are indefensible."As they sat together for public comments after their private meeting, Obama sought to put the disagreement in the best light, and in the context of a relationship of two allies — one, however, showing strains of impatience.

WASHINGTON – The terror group al-Qaida last summer considered hijacking and detonating oil tankers in non-Muslim seas to provoke an "extreme economic crisis" in the West, according to documents seized from Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, the U.S. government said.It said there was no specific or imminent threat and that officials don't know whether al-Qaida had continued the plotting since last year.In a confidential warning obtained by The Associated Press, the FBI and the Homeland Security Department said that al-Qaida sought information on the size and construction of oil tankers, and determined that blowing them up from the inside would be easiest due to the strength of their hulls. Al-Qaida recommended test runs of the plot."We are not aware of indications of any specific or imminent terrorist attack plotting against the oil and natural gas sector overseas or in the United States," DHS spokesman Matthew Chandler said in a statement Friday. "However, in 2010 there was continuing interest by members of al-Qaida in targeting oil tankers and commercial oil infrastructure at sea."Another U.S. official, who was briefed on the bin Laden documents, described the plot as aspirational and not fully formed. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters. The government warning went to federal, state and local law enforcement and companies in the oil and gas industries. The Homeland Security Department said it was not raising the nation's terror alert level.

Mississippi crests in Vicksburg, claims 1st life

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Mississippi River crested at more than 14 feet above flood stage in Vicksburg on Thursday, a slightly lower than expected level that eased worries about water potentially spilling over a nearby levee and inundating thousands more acres of farmland. But officials warned that the flood was by no means over. The river was expected to stay at its crest for several days before beginning a long, slow retreat. It could remain above flood stage until mid-June."The crest is by no means the end of it," said Col. Jeffrey R. Eckstein, commander of the Army Corps of Engineers' Vicksburg District. In one of the city's hardest-hit areas, mechanic Chris Lynn has paddled a small aluminum boat across his flooded property every day to mark the water line on his shop. Water has crept close to his mobile home, though it has yet to go in."My son died in a car accident a few months ago, so this ain't nothing. But to a lot of people, it is," he said.Authorities had been worried for days that water might spill over the Yazoo Backwater Levee north of Vicksburg. But because the water was not expected to rise any higher, they did not expect to evacuate any more people. Some 2,000 city residents have already been forced from their homes. Also Thursday, authorities reported the first person to die in Mississippi floodwaters since the mighty river began climbing out its banks last month in the Midwest — a 69-year-old man who apparently collapsed in the high water.

M'sian aid ship not allowed to berth at Egyptian port and ordered to leave

EL-ARISH (Egpyt): An Egyptian navy gunboat has ordered aid ship MV Finch (Spirit of Rachel Corrie), which has been at anchor for three days, to leave the waiting area at El-Arish Port."They are preventing the ship from berthing," said Bernama journalist Mohd Faizal Hassan, who is one of the 12 passengers and crew on board the MV Finch, in a SMS note to Bernama's headquarters here Thursday night.According to Mohd Faizal, the MV Finch has been ordered not to come within a three nautical mile radius of the port.He also reported that fresh rations and water supply were fast running out.He said the ship was still waiting for permission from the port authority to berth."We do not know when the permission will be given," he said. The ship, which is carrying 7.5km of PVC pipes to help repair Gaza's devastated sewerage system, had tried to break Israel's blockade of the strip earlier this week but was forced to divert to El-Arish Port after it came under fire from Israeli naval forces.- Bernama

IMF chief resigns while fighting sex assault charges

International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has resigned his post after being arrested on sexual assault charges. The former IMF chief is being held in a New York City jail, and says he wants to devote all his strength, time, and energy to proving his innocence.Strauss-Kahn’s resignation sets off a heated debate over who should replace him as head of the powerful world financial institution.
Traditionally, the head of the IMF has been a European under a deal that also puts an American at the head of the World Bank. European officials say the IMF is playing a key role in resolving a debt crisis in Europe, making it important that the that the next IMF chief have a deep understanding of European issues. News reports say French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is a leading candidate for the job.But officials from other nations say it is time for the top IMF job to go to someone from one of the world’s emerging economies.China is among several countries that are calling for the next IMF chief to be chosen on the basis of impartiality, transparency, and merit.News reports say there are candidates from India, Singapore, Turkey, South Africa, and other nations.Strauss-Kahn faces a new hearing in New York City Thursday to determine if he can be released on bail. On Monday, a judge ordered the wealthy, 62-year-old French national to stay in jail out of concern he might flee to avoid prosecution. Separately, a grand jury is considering whether to indict Strauss-Kahn on allegations of attempted rape and other crimes.

'Planker' in coma in Australia

BRISBANE, Australia (AFP) – A man was in a coma Thursday after falling off a car reportedly while "planking" as three others were charged for taking part in the Internet craze on the roof of a moving vehicle.Simon Hallam, 20, may never recover from horrific head injuries after falling heavily onto the road from a fast-moving car as he attempt to "plank", according to local reports, although other media said he was "car surfing".The "planking" craze involves someone lying flat on their stomach with their arms against their bodies in unusual and sometimes dangerous situations, with photos of their exploits posted on social media sites. The fad has gone viral in Australia over the last week, but claimed a life on Sunday when a man died in Brisbane after plummeting to his death while attempting to "plank" on a seventh-storey balcony.Hallam's father, Terry, told the Brisbane Courier-Mail that what happened to his son was a strong warning to others thinking about joining the craze."The Internet and Facebook, they're just dreadful things ... they encourage this sort of behaviour among the young ones," he said."And young ones don't think about the consequences of their actions, they think it's fun, so they do it with little thought for what could happen - like this."

Tanks storm south Syria city, U.S. piles on pressure

AMMAN (Reuters) - The West warned of more pressure on Syria if a crackdown against pro-democracy protests continues, hours after tanks stormed a city in the south, cradle of an uprising against Baathist rule.U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that both the European Union and the United States -- which have already slapped sanctions on a number of senior Syrian officials but not on President Bashar al-Assad -- were planning more steps."We will be taking additional steps in the days ahead," Clinton said, saying she agreed with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who told reporters that the time for Syria to make changes was now.Rights activists say a crackdown to crush a two-month wave of protests against Assad has killed at least 700 civilians.Syrian tanks moved into a southern city on the Hauran Plain on Tuesday after encircling it for three weeks, activists said.Soldiers fired machineguns as tanks and armoured personnel carriers entered Nawa, a city of 80,000 people 60 km (40 miles) north of the town of Deraa, according to activists from the region.

IMF chief jailed without bail in NY hotel-sex case

NEW YORK – Haggard and unshaven after a weekend in jail, the chief of the International Monetary Fund was denied release on bail Monday on charges of trying to rape a hotel maid as allegations of other, similar attacks by Dominique Strauss-Kahn began to emerge. In France, a lawyer for a novelist said the writer is likely to file a criminal complaint accusing Strauss-Kahn of sexually assaulting her nine years ago. A French lawmaker accused him of attacking other maids in previous stays at the same luxury hotel. And in New York, prosecutors said they are working to verify reports of at least one other case, which they suggested was overseas.Strauss-Kahn's weekend arrest rocked the financial world as the IMF grapples with the European debt crisis, and upended French presidential politics. Strauss-Kahn, a member of France's Socialist party, was widely considered the strongest potential challenger next year to President Nicolas Sarkozy.Making his first appearance on the sex charges, a grim-looking Strauss-Kahn stood slumped before a judge in a dark raincoat and open-collared shirt. The 62-year-old, silver-haired Strauss-Kahn said nothing as a lawyer professed his innocence and strove in vain to get him released on bail. The judge ruled against him after prosecutors warned that the wealthy banker might flee to France and put himself beyond the reach of U.S. law like the filmmaker Roman Polanski.

Libya buries imams reportedly killed in air strike

At least 50 other people were wounded in the NATO attack on the eastern city of Brega that killed 11 imams, early on Friday, with five of them in critical condition, government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim said.Hundreds of people gathered at the cemetery in Shatia al-Henshir, east of the capital, shouting "jihad, jihad", "martyrs of Libya" and "God, Libya and Moamar."Major Khuildi al-Hamidi, a long-time confidante of Mr Gaddafi, attended the burial, which was punctuated by commemorative gunfire.
In contrast to government accounts, NATO said a "command and control bunker was struck in Brega early (Friday) morning, as the structure was being used by the Gaddafi regime to coordinate strikes against the Libyan civilian population.""We are aware of allegations of civilian casualties in connection to this strike and although we cannot independently confirm the validity of the claim we regret any loss of life by innocent civilians when they occur," the alliance said.An imam at a news conference, identified as Nureddin al-Mijrah, called for revenge against the countries taking part in air strikes on Libya. He urged Muslims across the world "to take revenge for our brothers who died today. For every man we should take down one thousand men... from France, Italy, Denmark, Britain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates".Mr Gaddafi, whom Italy claimed on Friday might be wounded and on the run, said he was beyond the reach of NATO bombs."I want to say to the crusader cowards that I live in a place where I cannot be reached or killed - I live in the hearts of millions," he said in an audio message aired late on Friday on state television.

Rome Fears Devastating Earthquake Internet Forecast For May 11

ROME (Reuters) – If tourists find Rome unusually quiet next Wednesday, the reason will probably be that thousands of locals have left town in fear of a devastating earthquake allegedly forecast for that day by a long-dead seismologist. For months Italian internet sites, blogs and social networks have been debating the work of Raffaele Bendandi, who claimed to have forecast numerous earthquakes and, according to internet rumors, predicted a "big one" in Rome on May 11.The national television network RAI has run programs aimed at calming rising panic among Romans. The civil protection agency has issued statements reiterating the official scientific view that earthquakes can't be predicted.Yet many residents of the Eternal City aren't listening."I'm going to tell the boss I've got a medical appointment and take the day off," barman Fabio Mengarelli told Reuters. "If I have to die I want to die with my wife and kids, and masses of people will do the same as me."Chef Tania Cotorobai also said she would be taking a day off in the country. "I don't know if I really believe it but if you look at the internet you see everything and the opposite of everything, and it end up making you nervous," she said.

La Nina brings flood risks and drought to the West

SALT LAKE CITY – The winter and early spring have been extreme across the West, with record snowpacks bringing joy to skiers and urban water managers but severe flood risks to northern Utah, Wyoming and Montana. And despite all the wet weather in the Rockies and Sierra Nevada, parts of eastern Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona are in severe drought and gearing up for what is forecast as a bad fire season. In New Mexico, some 400 fires, driven by relentless winds, have already raced across 315,000 acres.Credit — or blame — for the extreme weather goes mostly to a strong La Nina, which is associated with cooler than normal water temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean and an atmospheric flow that's causing drier than normal conditions in the Southwest and wetter than normal in the Northwest..
"This winter has been fairly unusual," said Laura Edwards, a research climatologist at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nev., in what can only be considered an understatement.
Randy Julander, supervisor for the Utah Snow Survey, described more colorfully the disparity between the snow buried, flood endangered parts of the West and those that are parched and burning: "They're wishing they could get a little of what we have. (The wet weather) just continues to get worse. At this point, all you can do is open the chute, let her buck and hope your butt stays glued to the saddle."

Anxiety rises along the flood-swollen at Mississippi

HICKMAN, Ky. – People along the lower Mississippi River and its tributaries packed their belongings and emergency workers feverishly filled sandbags as high water pushed its way downstream Wednesday in a slow-motion disaster that could break flood records dating to the 1920s.From Illinois to Mississippi, thousands of people have already been forced from their homes, and anxiety is rising along with the mighty river, even though it could be a week or two before some of the most severe flooding hits."I've never seen it this bad," said 78-year-old Joe Harrison, who has lived in the same house in Hickman since he was 11 months old. Floodwaters from the Mississippi turned his house into an island — dry but surrounded by water. He has been using a boat to get to his car, parked on dry ground along a highway that runs by his house. Up and down the Big Muddy, farmers braced for a repeat of the desperate strategy employed earlier this week in Missouri, where Army engineers blew up a levee and sacrificed vast stretches of farmland to protect populated areas upstream.Forecasters and emergency officials said some of the high-water records set during the great floods of 1927 and 1937 could fall. On Wednesday, for example, the Mississippi eclipsed the 46-foot mark set in 1937 in Caruthersville, Mo., and the water was still rising, with a crest of 49.5 feet forecast for Sunday.

Osama Bin Laden's neighbors noticed unusual things

ABBOTTABAD, Pakistan – When a woman involved in a polio vaccine drive turned up at Osama bin Laden's hideaway, she remarked to the men behind the high walls about the expensive SUVs parked inside. The men took the vaccine, apparently to administer to the 23 children at the compound, and told her to go away. The terror chief and his family kept well hidden behind thick walls in this northwestern hill town they shared with thousands of Pakistani soldiers. But glimpses of their life are emerging — along with deep skepticism that authorities didn't know they were there.
Although the house is large, it was unclear how three dozen people could have lived there with any degree of comfort.
Neighbors said they knew little about those inside in the compound but bin Laden apparently depended on two men who would routinely emerge to run errands or to a neighborhood gathering, such as a funeral. There were conflicting details about the men's identities. Several people said they were known as Tariq and Arshad Khan and had identified themselves as cousins from elsewhere in northwestern Pakistan. Others gave different names and believed they were brothers.
Arshad was the oldest, and both spoke multiple languages, including Pashto and Urdu, which are common here, residents said.
As Navy SEALs swept through the compound early Monday, they handcuffed those they encountered with plastic zip ties and pressed on in pursuit of bin Laden. After killing the terror leader, his son and two others, they doubled back to move nine women and 23 children away from the compound, according to U.S. officials.
